I initially wrote this sometime back in 2012 - I can only hope for the best of changes to overcome the madness.
The talk about sinking boats and boiling temperatures have passed. But has it? Now both has become a reality and still so much conversation on about the subjects, which anything further might get lost in the space where no one wants to taste. I’m hoping that someone is listening. I’m not talking about you - the online henchmen of the world governments. What I’m about to write is a human perspective. Maybe a bit over-caffeinated but my humanity still intact; I think. Not stating what is right or wrong. Drink it, like black coffee. Don’t add too much sugar and listen to the words.
I hear about boats. I understand that the politicians want to stop them. I hear of people seeking asylum and how it’s a drain on the developed world. They seek refuge from certain death in their mother land. Some strive to enjoy the benefits of a better land. Not all are following the rules, but everyone is looking for an escape. Poverty or persecution, to risk their lives they must be running away from something darker than death.
Most of us live in bubbles of controlled happy information and fake fantasies that the hardest part is trying to put ourselves in their situations. ‘Try’ being a keyword cause we rarely work on even seeking positivity in our lives. We like to draw borders and categorize the one and the only planet we have into countries. Call them 1st, 2nd, 3rd world as if were separated by space and time. We are all stuck in one and the only world and its heating up. Yes, there is a debate; however, the evidence and projections seem to confirm it.
The planet is changing for the worst, mainly due to us jolly humans. It doesn’t care about man made boundaries, passports, race, religion, colour and the million other ways we would want to divide us. We are all going to suffer, but we’re too comfortable to make a change. In the near future we might be boiling, freezing, drowning, starving, and killing for water but right now we’re ok. Let our babies deal with the mess.
Australia is predicted to be worse hit by climate change. The continent’s environment will deteriorate impacting agriculture and food supply. There won’t be anything left to dig up and sell or burn. With the lack of rainfall, we will run out of fresh water; the oceans will rise and overrun these ancient lands. Life down under is looking bleak. The fate is similar for Europe and many other continents. The 1st world is likely to be the largest population of environmental refugees.
Would the future world’s environmental refugees want to be treated the same way as how the world treats the refugees of today?
Think about it. Wait; no - go and see the facts for yourselves. The bitter truth like black coffee will wake you up but make sure you avoid that sugar. Temporary sweetness if going to kill us sooner than we like it.
